We created the habit, and we can fix it, if needed.

If you have something you want to change in your life, start taking action today!  Choose to act, feel, think, eat, or behave differently from what you feel is doing you an injustice.  You do have a choice!  Those routines of behaviour don’t stand a chance if you don’t accept them anymore as part of who you are!

7 common mistakes when changing habits!

So many of us get into bad habits over time, and then those bad habits can take on a life of their own; they beome second nature to us, and we feel they define us.  The chocolate bar once a week becomes a daily occurrence.  Or, the fast food stop which used to happen once in a while is now going on each lunch-time… Yet, how’d this happen?

The beauty of habits is that there are reasons for them.  For example, “I was needing a sweet thing to pick me up so I grabbed a chocolate bar.” Or, “Today I’m just too busy to pack a lunch, so the fast food joint is making my lunch.” How about, “There’s just not enough time to walk to work so I drove,” and on and on it goes…

Habits can form around things that are convenient for us in the short term, but create massive inconveniences for us in the future. Find the reason you have the habit, think about it, look at the emotions it brings up, and then dissacoiate from it.  It doesn’t have to define you!  Instead of thinking you should replace the habit with another one, why not think about finding a better option as a positive upgrade.Habits: Healthy Eating, and Your Life!

For instance, maybe you are eating a lot of French Fries, but a better option would be a salad, so you upgrade your selection to a salad and this becomes your habit.  Yes, you are changing a habit, but it feels better to upgrade a habit, no?!

So here is the thing, if you have a habit and you’d like to change it, first and foremost, you can.  As well, you will be okay without this habit.  It doesn’t define you, and it is only a habit as long as you continue doing whatever it is you are doing.

Personally, when I’m dining out I like to have water with my meal, and I eat slowly while enjoying other people’s conversations.  I chew my food a lot!  I don’t ever go to a meal starved if I can help it!  When I order, I ask what the waiter thinks is the healthiest meal items, and then I go from there!  These are all habits that I find are good for me, while I’m dining out; I didn’t always have these habits…

Being a health-focused foodie, I’m always curious what ingredients go into making my meal I’m about to eat; whether I’m dining in, or when I’m dining out. I’m a curious type of person, who always wants to know the ‘why’ and not just the ‘what’… Restaurants practicing environmental stewardship while offering high quality dishes are my favourite dining-out places.
